Famous Places Around the World with Mice Problems

Rat infestations at home are nasty but what would you do if you travel to famous places all over the globe and find out that the rats are there to welcome you on your vacation? Not a pretty sight, is it?

Many famous structures, however, are hundreds of years old and this can be one of the reasons why you might find a rat scurrying on its grounds. We have listed eight famous places in the world which have been visited by these rodents at one point in history:

  1. The Louvre Museum in Paris. This year, The Louvre has been invaded by pesky mice and rats scavenging for food that accumulated beneath the hedges in the famous Louvre garden. Tourists love to have picnics in the Louvre Garden and unfortunately, leave some leftover food behind. This caused the rats to scavenge around for their daily dinner. Talk about real-life Remy of Ratatouille!
  2. The Castle Island in Boston. In 2012, the popular South Boston Park experienced a growing rat infestation problem.
  3. The White House, Washington DC. The 200-year old wonder is not rodent-free after all. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter ordered his staff to get rid of mice inside the White House after he was invaded by a stench of a dead mice coming from the walls of the meeting rooms in the White House. First lady Barbara Bush also had her share of swimming with the not-so-cute and enormous furry fiend.
  4. House of Parliament, Britain. Even the lawmakers are not saved. The House of Parliament is known to have been infested with nasty rodents. This structure was demolished in 1834 because of a fire and was later on rebuilt in the 1840s.
  5. New York City. Yes, it is still infested with rats. Despite the fact that the number was reported to be declining, New York City is still home to thousands or even millions of rats. This can be traced to an increased volume of wasteful food disposal. It never fails – where there’s a food mess, there will always be a rat party.
  6. Johor Bahru, Malaysia. In Asia, Johor Bahru is famous for attractions such as Legoland and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town. However, in 2013, they also had a rat infestation problem caused by dirty food on the premises.
  7. London. Where there are sewers, rats are most likely to be there. The buried rivers and cathedral-like sewers of London Under are perfect habitats for rats. This structure was constructed between 1859 to 1865.
  8. Karni Mata Temple, India. This should make it to the list primarily because there are more than 20,000 rats inside Karni Mata Temple. But instead of these rats being hated, they are worshipped and fed with milk, candy and other sweets. The rats in this temple are believed to be reincarnation of the Goddess Karni Mata. This temple was built in the early 1900s.

Many of these famous places have been swarmed by these furry critters because rats love old and dark places to nest in. Another thing that attracts rats is an awesome food supply and because a lot of people would also eat while visiting these places, they leave some crumbs here and several leftovers there; making these places very conducive for rats to live and breed in.
